Note! Here are the Symptoms of the Omicron Variant in COVID-19 Patients

A doctor in South Africa, one of the first to suspect a different strain of Corona virus among patients, that symptoms varian Omicron (B.1.1.529) is so far mild and can be treated at home.

Dr Angelique Coetzee, a practitioner and chair of the South African Medical Association, told Reuters that on November 18, she saw seven COVID-19 patients at her clinic having symptoms that differed from the dominant Delta variant, albeit “very mild”.

Coetzee said a patient on Nov. 18 complained of being extremely tired for two days with body aches and headaches.

“The symptoms at that stage are very much related to normal viral infections. And since we haven’t seen COVID-19 for the past eight to 10 weeks, we decided to do a test,” he said, adding that the patient and his family turned out to be positive.

On that day, more patients came with the same symptoms. That’s when he realized there was “something else going on.” Since then, he sees two to three patients every day.

“We’ve seen a lot of Delta patients during the third wave. And this doesn’t fit the clinical picture,” he said, adding that he notified the NICD on the same day as the clinical results of those patients.

He said most of the patients experienced very mild symptoms and so far no one had admitted patients for further treatment at the hospital.

“We can treat this patient conservatively at home,” he said.

Coetzee, who is also on the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Vaccines, said unlike the Delta variant, patients have not reported loss of smell or taste and there is no major drop in oxygen levels with the new variant.

Many experienced by the young age group

His experience so far is that the variant affects people 40 years of age or younger more. Nearly half of the patients with Omicron symptoms he treats also have not been vaccinated.

“The most dominant clinical complaint is severe fatigue for a day or two. They say headaches and body aches,” he explained.
