Robert Lewandowski missed out on the Ballon d’Or two years in a row. While the 2020 Golden Ball was canceled due to the Corona, the Pole lost out against Lionel Messi this year. The Argentine had recently campaigned for the FCB professional to receive the Ballon d’Or for the previous year retrospectively. Lewandowski himself rejects this, however.
“Everyone knows you were the winner last year. I think France Football should give you the 2020 award. You deserve it ”, with these words Messi presented himself as a“ big winner ”during his Ballon d’Or speech and at the same time paid Lewandowski his respect. The Pole himself seems to have doubts about the Argentinean’s sincerity: “Messi’s words? I hope that it was a sincere statement from a great footballer and not just empty words, ”said the Bayern striker to“ Kanal Sportowy ”.
Lewandowski doesn’t want a consolation prize
The 33-year-old also made it clear that he is not interested in a consolation prize and does not want to receive the Ballon d’Or retrospectively: “I am not enthusiastic about this idea,” he said of Messi’s proposal.
Pascal Ferre, editor-in-chief of the soccer magazine “France Football” and head of the Ballon d’Or, had recently indicated that a subsequent award of the Golden Ball to Lewandowski was not categorically excluded. According to Ferre, they are quite willing to “think about the Messi idea”. In view of the latest statements made by the Pole, this issue now seems to be finally off the table.
