Not Aldi or Lidl: in which supermarkets do we do our shopping most often?

Colruyt Maintains Top Spot in Belgian Supermarket Shopping

Belgian shoppers clearly favor bargains. A new study reveals that the supermarket landscape is fiercely competitive, with one chain consistently attracting the largest share of consumer spending. This preference highlights the significance of pricing in today’s market.

Market Share Leaders

According to Retailsonar’s findings, Colruyt remains the top choice for Belgians, capturing 20.55% of their grocery spending. Delhaize comes in second, holding 14.62% of the market. Discount retailer Aldi secures third place with 11.54%.

The Competitive Pack

Aldi outpaces Lidl, which is fourth with 8.8%. Carrefour Market follows closely with 8.16% of the market share. The Dutch supermarket chains, Albert Heijn and Jumbo, trail at a distance.

Albert Heijn accounts for 4.53% and Jumbo for 1.34% of Belgian grocery purchases. These are surpassed by Intermarché, which holds a 6.50% share of the market.

The rise of discount supermarkets reflects wider consumer trends. A recent report shows a 15% increase in budget grocery shopping, demonstrating that consumers are actively seeking value (Statista 2024).

Looking Ahead

As the market continues to evolve, maintaining competitive pricing will remain critical for supermarket success. Consumers’ focus on value is reshaping the industry.
