Norwegian Postal Service releases gay Santa / GORDON Christmas video

The video is a reference to the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, released in 1989. In the story, Santa and his boyfriend Harry have been forging bonds over the course of several years. However, the couple is limited to fleeting meetings due to Santa’s busy schedule, until he turns to Posten for help.

The promotional video was made to mark the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of same-sex relationships in Norway, which will be celebrated next year.

Context:

Norway is a very progressive country with regard to the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. In 1981, the state became one of the first in the world to enact an anti-discrimination law that explicitly includes sexual orientation.

Since 2009, gay marriage has been legal in the country, as well as adoption and fertility treatment for lesbian couples.

In 2016, Norway became the fourth country in Europe to pass a law allowing transgender people to reassign themselves solely on the basis of self-determination.
