Norway prepared for possible influx of Afghan asylum seekers

The Taliban has launched several offensives against Afghan government forces in recent times. They have shrugged off the withdrawal of foreign forces and taken control of a number of districts, border crossings and surrounded provincial capitals.

This has led to government soldiers deserting, while civilians stand in hour-long queues to secure a passport to get out of the country. Others leave the country on their own and flee west, especially towards Turkey, which is the gateway to Europe.

The UDI has noticed this, says Knut Berntsen, acting department director in the regional and reception department at the UDI, to Our country.

– Therefore, the UDI has now retrieved the contingency plan that was made after the influx in 2015, he says.

Then more than one million refugees and migrants came to Europe, more than 30,000 applied for asylum in Norway.

– We have previously entered into agreements on basic reception in all UDI’s regions, and we will soon enter into new agreements with suppliers on reception that can be used at short notice. In addition, we have plans to be able to establish accommodation in emergency rooms, tent camps and ships, if the need arises, says Berntsen.
