Norway holds Russia responsible for digital attack on parliament | NOW

Norway blames Russia for a major digital attack on parliament in August. In the attack, email accounts of MPs were hacked. The Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs says that Norway “on the basis of government information” assumes that Russia is behind the attack.

The Norwegian parliament announced on September 1 that it had been the target of the attack the previous week. At the time, authorities did not say who they hold responsible for the operation.

It is unclear whether Norway will now take action against Russia. A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not want to say anything about this. The Russian ministry was not immediately accessible.

Russia has recently been accused of digital attacks on Western countries more often. In July the European Union laid for the first time sanctions due to cyber attacks of Russian origin. This happened as a result of, among other things, the hacking attempt on the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) in The Hague in 2018.

It was the first time that the Council of the European Union imposed sanctions. The Council has had that power since May 2019. Sanctions against individuals must have a punitive and dissuasive effect.
