North Shore: increase in collisions with moose

POINTE-AUX-OUTARDES | Collisions between a car and a moose have been more and more frequent in recent weeks on La Haute-Côte-Nord.

The Ministry of Transport (MTQ) has identified four collisions with moose in the past two weeks between the roundabout and the main road in Pointe-aux-Outardes.

However, in recent years, there have only been six.

The ministry considers this area to be the most risky in the region for collisions with deer.

Regional management is currently analyzing the various options. An anticervid fence is already ruled out because the topography of the land is not optimal.

A permanent solution could be in place within two or three years. This delay is too long for the PQ member for René-Lévesque, Martin Ouellet, who met with the Minister of Transport’s office on Wednesday.

“What the Minister of Transport was telling us is that in order to put in facilities, whether it be lampposts or fences, we must first check whether the land belongs to them. Otherwise, you have to acquire them. It’s a somewhat long process, ”explains Martin Ouellet.

As on this road, there are Hydro-Quebec transmission lines. The member for the region considers that the land belongs to a crown corporation and that, therefore, the delay should be shorter.

For now, the short-term solution is to install signs to warn motorists of the presence of wild animals on this stretch.

“The message will be changed from time to time so as not to trivialize it and that people always remain alert”, indicates Caroline Rondeau, spokesperson for the ministry.

An electronic petition calling for improved safety in the area is currently online. The deputy for René-Lévesque will table it in the National Assembly in mid-September.
