North Maluku Becomes One of the Provinces with the Highest Diabetes in Indonesia

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Deputy Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) RI Dante Saksono Harbuwono revealed that North Maluku is one of the provinces that has the highest diabetes patients in Indonesia. He also reminded that diabetes is not a disease that only occurs in urban communities.

“Studies show that in some places, for example our study, in rural areas the diabetes rate is also high. In North Maluku the diabetes rate is one of the highest in Indonesia,” said Dante in World Diabetes Day press briefing 2021, Monday (15/11/2021).

The statement relates to the commemoration of World Diabetes Day which falls on Sunday, November 14, 2021. Dante Saksono Harbuwono revealed that the trigger for diabetes is caused by various things, one of which is genetic factors.

“Spider web of genetic pattern or the genetic density that is getting more and more attached due to the marriage between the genes given by the mother, and the genes given by the father, so that future generations have access to diabetes more often,” said Dante.

Thus, promotive and preventive steps are considered to be important things that can be done together. One way that can be done by the community is of course by implementing a good lifestyle.

According to Dante, a good lifestyle to prevent diabetes can be done by maintaining a healthy diet. In this regard, the Ministry of Health revealed that it was initiating a low sugar and salt diet.

This was done in order to prevent the increasing number of diabetic patients in Indonesia. And, concurrently to prevent an increase in hypertensive patients.
