(CNN) – North Korea fired three unidentified projectiles on Monday (local time), the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff reported.
“Our army detected 3 unidentified projectiles fired this morning from the Sondok area in Hamgyong Province, North Korea, to the northeast, to the East Sea,” the South Korean Ministry of Defense said in a message from Text sent to journalists.
“At this time, our army is monitoring the related movement in case of an additional launch and keeps preparing.”
The East Sea is also known as the Sea of Japan.
So far no further details are known.
The launch occurs one week after the firing of two unidentified short-range projectiles, from a nearby area of the coastal city of Wonsan, to waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan.
Those projectiles were probably part of North Korea’s military exercises for its winter tests, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
Last year, North Korea launched test missiles 13 times amid stalled denuclearization talks with U.S.
In its New Year message, Pyongyang warned that it will show a “new strategic weapon” in the near future.
Experts said the “strategic weapon” could be an advanced type of their intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) or a ballistic missile launched from a submarine (SLBM).
