North Korea has approved a “new type of tactical guided missile” test

The North Korean news agency KCNA reports that the trial was conducted by the North Korean Academy of Defense Sciences, which it considers to be very successful.

The agency reports that both missiles successfully hit targets in the water about 600 kilometers from shore. The KCNA also reports that the new weapons system could carry two and a half tons of heavy warheads.

North Korea has already reportedly fired two ballistic missiles at sea on Thursday, the first since U.S. President Joe Baiden’s inauguration, and the firing is the first major provocation to the Baiden administration.

After the incident, Biden announced that the United States would respond appropriately if North Korea stepped up missile testing.

According to the South Korean Armed Forces General Staff, North Korea fired two short-range missiles from the Hamgjonnamdo province on Thursday into the Sea of Japan, which in Korea is called the East Sea. The missiles flew 450 kilometers and reached a maximum altitude of 60 kilometers.

The missile test earned condemnation from Japan and calls from Russia to start new talks on a peace process on the Korean peninsula.

Last Sunday, North Korea fired two non-ballistic missiles with close range. U.S. officials said it was a routine missile test and that it would not stop Washington’s efforts to make contact with Pyongyang.

UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles and severe international sanctions on Pyongyang to deter it from developing missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Washington is currently reassessing its approach to Pyongyang after a tumultuous relationship during President Donald Trump’s time, as mutual threats and insults were followed by a face-to-face meeting of leaders, but in the end no progress was made in efforts to curb North Korea’s nuclear program.
