In the report Radio Free Asia, this crisis began to be felt directly by business actors, especially the transportation business. In fact, this situation paralyzes the activity of shipping goods at home and abroad.
“New tires are very rare and even used tires are hard to find,” said a transportation business official in the northeastern province of North Hamgyong, as quoted by RFA, Friday (1/14/2022).
“Drivers will use the same tires until the tread is worn and shiny, so it is customary to reuse a punctured or torn tire by placing a small piece of used tire tube on top.”
He said that this was due to several factors, including the absence of domestic tire production facilities plus an imported tire tap, which was very difficult for the North Korean government.
“I’ve never seen new tires produced locally. Since international trade has been stopped due to border closures, importing used tires has become difficult,” he added.
The same thing was seen in a company near South Hamgyong Province. A 2.5 tonne truck has been grounded since last fall. In addition to the tire crisis, the truck’s blockage was also caused by a shortage of fuel.
“The cars would have been out of service for a long time if it wasn’t the driver’s responsibility to take care of them. Among other businesses in the province that have been supplied with cars like ours, many have already sold their vehicles,” said a source from the company.
North Korea’s economic activities are known so far it is still difficult to carry out normally. The communist state’s authorities still restrict foreign trade for several reasons, one of which is the Covid-19 pandemic in which North Korea is restricting entry to curb the virus.
