Nord Stream 2 – US will demand pipeline shutdown in case of Russian invasion of Ukraine

Today, the United States and its European allies view Nord Stream 2 as a potential lever of influence over Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At the same time, the United States is considering the introduction of sanctions against Russian banks and the export of goods from the country. The goal is to agree on a package of constraints that are comprehensive, economically painful, and quickly realizable.

Back in the summer, Biden and the Merkel government signed an agreement on the mandatory introduction of measures against Russia if the latter uses energy as a weapon or acts aggressively against Ukraine. Then the US President abandoned sanctions against companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2.

It is not yet clear how the new German government will act in the event of a threat to Ukraine. According to the new chancellor, Olaf Scholz, the board allegedly continues to monitor developments. He also avoided giving a clear answer to journalists’ questions regarding whether Germany would stop the gas pipeline in the event of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, the future Vice-Chancellor Robert Habek of the Greens, for his part, said that the above-mentioned events could affect the work of the project.
