Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine Awarded for Discoveries in Peripheral Immunity Tolerance
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – October 7, 2024 – The nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute has awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine to Morten Brunkow, James Ramsdell, and Tasuku Honjo for their groundbreaking discoveries concerning “peripheral immunity tolerance.” Their work has illuminated mechanisms preventing the immune system from attacking the bodyS own tissues, offering crucial insights into autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and lupus.
The Karolinska Institute will receive 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately $1.1 million) as the prize amount.
Peripheral immunity tolerance is defined as a key process maintaining immune system balance and preventing self-attack.This understanding is vital for developing treatments for autoimmune disorders.
Last year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their work on microRNA.
The Nobel Prize announcements continue in the coming days with the Physics prize on Tuesday, the Chemistry Prize on Wednesday, the Literature Prize on Thursday, the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel on October 13th.
