Nobel laureate Molina died, warning of the ozone hole

Molina was born in the capital of Mexico. He studied chemistry at universities in Mexico, Germany and the USA. Together with his American colleague Frank Sherwood, Rowland warned as early as 1974 against the use of chlorofluorocarbons, including CFCs. Scientists have predicted that the ozone layer will deplete due to them.

In 1995, Molina, Rowland and Paul Crutzen of the Netherlands received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for “their work in the field of atmospheric chemistry, especially in the field of ozone formation and decomposition”. Molina is so far the only Mexican scientist to receive this prestigious award.

In recent years, Molina has focused on air pollution in major cities, including his hometown of Mexico. He also warned of climate change.

The UN mission in Mexico called Molina a pioneer of atmospheric chemistry on Thursday. According to him, his work enabled the adoption of the so-called Montreal Protocol of 1987, which stopped the production of ozone-depleting substances.

Molina died coincidentally on the day the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that French Emmanuelle Charpentier and American Jennifer Doudna would receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year for developing so-called CRISPR-Cas9 molecular scissors, which can help scientists alter animal genetic information with high precision. plants and microorganisms.
