Hamburg – On Sunday (3 p.m.) the Hamburg Towers away from the BG Göttingen faces the next challenge. A victory is on the wish list. Magenta Sport will broadcast the game live from 2:45 p.m.

While the hard lockdown before Christmas is initially causing a few excessive last-minute shopping tours in the city centers and now unbearable waiting for the parcel delivery service, the Hamburg Towers are now looking forward to a little relaxation in the pre-Christmas BBL schedule stress.

After the last four games in ten days, the coaching staff had a full week to prepare for the last Towers game before the holidays before the game against BG Göttingen. “But unfortunately some players could not train for the first few days of last week,” said Head Coach Pedro Calles, who was unable to fully stress Justus Hollatz and Max DiLeo until the end of the week.

At the end of the week, captain Bryce Taylor, who did not take part in the Towers training with a sack full of gifts, but in a sports outfit, took the pressure off the last stress-tested medical department. Almost 2020 years ago, the Three Kings had gold, incense and myrrh in their luggage for the newly born Christ Child, the Hamburg Towers will travel to Göttingen on the fourth Sunday in Advent without presents.

Instead, a victory against the BG is on their own wish list. “First of all, I want all players to stay healthy. As a second wish, I would like the fans back in the halls and then as a third, I would of course also take the win. But first and foremost is that everyone is healthy, then we can also play good basketball and the result then comes from that, ”head coach Pedro Calles grants a look at his wish list to basketball Santa Claus.

The start for BG Göttingen in this season was made to measure. With three wins, the Veilchen impressively qualified – as the only team of the three already established qualifiers, the Roel Moors team remained undefeated, in Group A they still play – for the TOP FOUR in the Magenta Sport-BBL-Pokal. After a defeat against runner-up Ludwigsburg, two narrow successes against Braunschweig and Chemnitz followed. In December, however, last year’s quarter-finalist in the final tournament is still unsuccessful.

“I am very grateful for the great experience last year that I was able to take part in the final tournament with the team and continue playing basketball. I still have a little contact with some of the players from last year in Göttingen via Instagram, but that’s about it, “said Terry Allen, who swapped the purple jersey for the Hamburg camouflage style in the summer, with a view of the almost completely redesigned Göttingen. Only center Dennis Kramer, jumping miracle Marvin Omuvwie and Matthis Mönninghoff, who is currently injured with a torn ligament, remained from last year’s squad. Akeem Vargas (already 2012/13) returned from Frankfurt, Harper Kamp – usually coach of the regional division ASC Göttingen – is currently making his comeback after the actual end of his career in 2018.

The Göttingen group is led by Luke Nelson, Tai Odiase and Aubrey Dawkins. While the British international Nelson shines as the top scorer (16.2 pps) and best assists (4.8 pps), the American Odiase is a real edge under the boards, not only as a scorer (15.7 pps), but also appears as the best rebounder (5.7 RpS) and shot blocker (1.3 fps). The Trio Infernal is completed by all-purpose weapon Dawkins (15.3 pps), who, like Luke Nelson, is highly dangerous with a hit rate of 41.2% from a distance and, as the second best rebounder (4.5 pps) from Lower Saxony, not before contact in the zone recoils. “You can influence a game with your athleticism”, Pedro Calles knows that a good team defense is also required in Göttingen. All members of the Towers family should be very familiar with Göttingen’s leader and thinker, Jorge Gutierrez, from last year. Whether the Mexican will hold the strings in his hands on Sunday is uncertain: Guti is currently suffering from adductor problems.

Although top scorer Kameron Taylor missed the last two games due to injury, the Hamburg Towers first secured a clear home win (100: 79) against Gießen and then just barely missed a surprise against Ulm (69:73). “We have to approach every game as if it would be our last. Any team can beat anyone in one evening. So we have to try to approach every game with the same attitude, ”said Terry Allen, who marked the most points for his team at the start of the season against Bamberg. At Towers 2020/21, hiring is a team matter – one for all, all for one. “For me it works especially when we work together and fight for each other every day, including in training,” says Pedro Calles, who already laid the foundation stone in recruiting. “In order for good team chemistry to develop, you have to have the right players on board,” Calles continued.

With 18.7 direct assists in the game, the Hamburg Towers are eighth in the league comparison. The fact that all players are fully committed to the defensive is not only emphasized by the head coach, the 9.3 steals – the best in the league – also prove it. This value becomes even more impressive when you consider that the towers, with only 12 ball losses on average, also take fourth best care of the playground equipment. While four Towers have advanced to the top scorer in at least one game in the previous six competitive games, the importance of Maik Kotsar only becomes apparent at second glance. The quiet giant scores (12.5 RpS) and reboundet (6.8 RpS) consistently, is apparently inconspicuous – but its +/- value (indicates how many points a team scores more or less than the opponent if the player on the field) of 15.5 clearly underlines the positive influence on the Towers game.

A quick chat before the game:

Pedro Calles: “We had a regular week to prepare for the next game. Unfortunately, some players couldn’t train for the first few days of last week. That’s why I would first and foremost wish that all players stay healthy. As a second wish I would like the fans back in the halls and then as a third I would also take the win. But first and foremost is that everyone is healthy, then we can play good basketball and the corresponding result then follows. Göttingen is a very disciplined team. They’re very athletic, especially Odiase and Dawkins. You can influence the game with your athleticism. “

Terry Allen: “I still have a little contact with some of the players from last year in Göttingen via Instagram, but that’s about it. Nevertheless, I am very grateful for the great experience last year that I was able to take part in the final tournament with the team and continue playing basketball. So many other leagues have shut down, so many players couldn’t continue, that’s why I appreciate that very much. “

“In every BBL game, you have to expect that it won’t be easy. We have to play with the necessary energy from the start. We have to approach every game as if it will be our last. Any team can beat anyone in one evening. So we have to try to approach every game with the same attitude. “(PM Towers)
