No permit for 538 Orange Day, test festival Lichtenvoorde ‘postponed’

Two controversial test events in which 10,000 visitors would be present, will not take place anyway. It concerns the 538 Orange Day in Breda and the Startschotgala in Lichtenvoorde.

In Breda the mayor has not issued a permit, in Lichtenvoorde the organization itself has decided to postpone the event. The 538th Orange Day was scheduled for April 24, the Startschotgala was to take place on May 1 on the site of the Zwarte Cross. The organization of the festival in Lichtenvoorde is looking to find another date for the festival.

The parties are part of a series of Fieldlab events. Visitors had to be able to show a negative test result. The pilot festivals should have shown how such massive events can be organized safely. Previously, the Fieldlabs were of a smaller scale. These festivals should have provided knowledge about whether the preventive measures also work on a larger scale.

Public order

The starting shot gala has been postponed due to the social debate, says the organizer. As the main reason for not granting a permit for the Orange Day, the municipality of Breda cites social unrest and public order: “The police are receiving more and more signals that 538 Orange Day will attract supporters and opponents of the corona policy and the Fieldlabs with all security risks, “Mayor Paul Depla said in a statement. The Medical Assistance Organization in the Region (GHOR) also gave a negative advice about the Fieldlab party.

The intended event was criticized in the past week. A petition against the party in the heart of Breda was signed about 370,000 times. The cabinet left the decision on whether or not to go ahead with the party to the municipality of Breda.

The petition was an initiative of a doctor at the Breda Amphia Hospital. He called the party “a blow in the face” to “troubled caregivers, patients on the growing waiting list, their loved ones and others”. Catering entrepreneurs from Breda were also angry about the party.

Visitors who have bought a ticket will get their money back, says 538 owner Talpa. The organization of the Startschotgala says it will “soon” come back to the question of what will happen with the purchased tickets.
