No need to worry anymore, an asteroid the size of a stadium has passed the Earth

However, it turns out that the space rock poses no threat to Earth.

Reported from space.com, Tuesday (27/7/2021) NASA is always monitoring the rock to learn more about the solar system. And if its orbit changes, the asteroid could pose a future risk to Earth.

At its closest approach, the asteroid, called 2008 GO20, swings as far as 2.8 million miles or 4.5 million kilometers from Earth. The giant asteroid was flying at a speed of 18,000 mph or nearly 29,000 km / h.

The rock is estimated to measure 318 to 720 feet or 97 to 220 meters. It is almost similar in size to the Great Pyramid of Giza standing at a height of 450 feet, or 138 m.

Any space rock larger than about 490 feet (150 m) that is expected to glide close to Earth within 4.6 million miles (7.5 million km) is considered a potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA).

Meanwhile GO20 2008 is potentially dangerous because over time the gravitational pull of the planets can change the orbital path of the object so that it crosses Earth’s orbit. If that happens, a future collision with planet Earth is possible.
