No more messing. Operators must indicate the exact speed of the Internet

The staff of the Office focused on the quality of the Internet connection already during the summer months of last year. Even then, it turned out that the situation in the Czech Republic is deplorable. Real speeds are much lower than those advertised.

In the control measurement, 16 percent of the connections showed a large deviation from the declared speed. In 36 percent of cases, it turned out that even customer connections were not able to reach the stated maximum speed. The reason is a reduction in bandwidth or a large distance from the control panel.

Therefore, the CTU considered it necessary to establish binding definitions of service quality parameters and deviations from the actual service performance, so that providers could no longer entice end users to unrealistic connection quality.

“The operator will no longer be able to say that it offers 100 Mbit / s if the service runs at a 100-megabit speed for just one minute a day. That will no longer work, “said Hana Továrková, chairwoman of the CTU, earlier. The declared speed will have to be met by 90 percent of the day.

According to the CTU, end users should have more relevant and clear information available for their decision on the choice of connection provider.

The big operators welcome the new rules. “We are pleased that the rules set by the CTU will apply to all entities in the market. In particular, they will have to be respected by those players who did not want to take on this obligation voluntarily, “said T-Mobile spokesman Jiří Janeček.

Vodafone also takes on a new obligation positively. “This step will contribute to the cultivation of the telecommunications market. A small deviation is possible due to the physical properties of access technologies, but the offer must be fair, “stated the operator’s spokesman Ondřej Luštinec.
