Researcher from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Biotechnology Research Center Wien Kusharyoto said all vaccines including the vaccine for COVID-19 must pass clinical trials up to three stages, namely stages I, II, and III.

“Clinical trials are carried out in three stages,” Wien said when quoted from Among, Jakarta, Friday.

Wien said that the vaccine candidates obtained from the results of research in the laboratory must go through the preclinical test stage on test animals, such as monkeys, and stage I, II and III clinical trials in humans. After passing the stage III clinical trial, it can be submitted to obtain a vaccine distribution permit and use it as a vaccine to the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM).

A phase I clinical trial was conducted on volunteers with fewer than 100 people to find out whether the vaccine was safe and to identify the immune response that emerged and to determine the dose.

Phase II was carried out on several hundred volunteers to determine the efficacy or effectiveness of the vaccine, as well as to determine the side effects of the vaccine.

Phase III was carried out on thousands of volunteers to prove that the vaccine was effective, safe and useful to prevent infection according to the goals and target population.

In phase III clinical trials, the selected volunteers need to get the possibility to be infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 in their daily activities.

“The ideal volunteers are those who have a high potential for infection in their daily activities, for example medical personnel,” said Wien.
