no commission of inquiry into the January 6 assault on the Capitol

ANALYSIS – The refusal of the Republican senators to see the formation of this commission of inquiry follows a clear political logic, even if it is perhaps short-sighted.

The assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was, for the majority of Americans, a trauma comparable to that caused by two other dramatic days in recent American history: the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22. 1963 and the Islamist terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001.

The first two events had prompted the creation by Congress of commissions of inquiry, bipartisan and endowed with wide powers, charged with shedding light on these events, in order to prevent their recurrence. There won’t be any for the third.

The creation of this commission, voted by the Chamber, however obtained the support of 6 Republican senators. But this number remained insufficient to override the opposition of the “filibuster” last Friday. This practice, which allows the adoption of a text to be postponed indefinitely, can only be overcome if 60 senators out of the 100 in the upper chamber
