No awards for ‘Close’, but a sneer at Will Smith and notable absentees: these were the Golden Globes | Movie

The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles was filled tonight with the biggest stars. And with that, the Golden Globes are back after a year off. The organization has been accused of corruption and discrimination. It even got to the point that the American channel “NBC” did not want to broadcast the show. But a reorganization would make everything shine again. Evening host Jerrod Carmichael opened the ceremony by addressing the elephant in the room directly: “I’m here because I’m black. I can’t say the HFPA was a racist organization, but it didn’t have a single black member until after George Floyd died.”

Twitter immediately exploded when Austin Butler was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actor. “I think Austin is physically incapable of shutting down Elvis’ voice.” He looked like Elvis himself gave a speech. Butler kept his legendary voice and ended his speech with a promise that he would love Elvis forever.

The comeback of the year was Ke Huy Quan. The ‘boy’ from ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ made an appearance as a 51-year-old man on ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once.’ Voucher for Best Supporting Actor award. Though he liked to look back on his career as a child star. “I feared I would never surpass what I achieved as a child.” To which he greeted none other than director Steven Spielberg.

Jennifer Coolidge got her first Golden Globe for her role as Tanya in ‘The White Lotus’. She accepted the award with a smile and a tear. Her eyes lit up as she thanked Mike White, who says the director is one of five people who have kept her in the industry for 20 years. The 60-year-old actress finally landed a Golden Globe, and to think she almost turned down the role because she didn’t consider herself in top physical shape. The actress received a standing ovation.

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael couldn’t resist among the awards. Without really naming him, the host mocked Will Smith and the shot he gave at the Oscars. When the show resumed after the commercial break, he said an award had been presented to Will Smith in the meantime. Specifically, the award for “Best Representation of Masculinity on Television”. And he wasn’t alone. Actor Eddie Murphy also gave some good advice in his speech: “Pay your taxes, mind your own business and keep the name of Will Smith’s wife out of your mouth.”

Finally, there were also some absentees. Winners Zendaya, Cate Blanchett and Amanda Seyfried have passed through the show. Busy year, strange times or a statement against the ‘racist’ organization?
