Nintendo’s profit fell. The new console has a reversal

Revenue fell 10 percent to JPY 322.6 billion in the fiscal first quarter. Sales of the Switch game console fell 22 percent to 4.45 million units, mainly due to declining interest in the smaller Switch Lite model. But a completely new console is coming in the autumn.

Probably the biggest improvement with the new switch is the presence of an OLED display, which is, after all, indicated by the name itself. It should offer a more faithful color rendering, significantly better contrast and, last but not least, a larger size. The original switch only had a 6.2-inch screen.

The internal storage has also been improved, now offering a capacity of 64 GB instead of the original 32 GB. However, other hardware that contributes to the overall performance of the console remained unchanged. In practice, this means that all titles can be played directly on the console in 720p and in the dock on a TV or monitor in 1080p.

In addition, the mentioned dock now offers a LAN connector, the console itself then boasts an improved audio system and a completely redesigned adjustable stand. It is now larger, so it should be much more stable when playing.

Switch OLED is already offered as part of a pre-order for CZK 9,490, the sale officially starts on October 8.

Interest in Animal Crossing has declined

Animal Crossing was launched last March. From April to June 2020, it sold ten million units. However, in the same period this year, only 1.26 million. Since the start of sales, bidders have bought 33.9 million pieces of this game.

Nintendo is a prime example of a society that has benefited from people turning to home entertainment in times of pandemic restrictions. However, analysts do not expect the company to withstand such a strong performance even after normal operations resume. The question also remains whether Nintendo will be able to penetrate the mobile gaming sector or among the next generation of consoles, which may include new technologies such as virtual reality. But a plus for Nintendo is its intellectual property, which includes lucrative goods and theme parks.

The company left the outlook for the entire fiscal year unchanged. Profits are set to fall 29 percent to JPY 340 billion and sales by nine percent to JPY 1.6 trillion, the AP agency wrote.
