Nintendo shuts down eShop sales in Russia amidst protests against Ukrainian war

Most major gaming companies have ended their Russian investment in protest against the war the country is waging against neighboring Ukraine. A result of this is that the Nintendo eShop has effectively been closed in the country since yesterday.

Although action was taken by Nintendo prior to this, the Japanese gaming giant has now stopped eShop sales in Russia, meaning that Switch users can no longer purchase games, and redeeming codes does not work either. Nintendo writes in a statement:

“Starting on May 31, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, Russian customers with an existing Nintendo Account will be able to download digital content that they have previously purchased. It will not be possible to make new purchases or use download codes in [Nintendo eShop] in Russia.”

Thanks, Game Developer.
