Nîmes: the social centers of Mas de Mingue and Chemin-Bas, places of reference

The Jean-Paulhan centers at Mas de Mingue and André-Malraux at Chemin-Bas try to maintain the link between the City and the inhabitants.

In the heart of these neighborhoods where social difficulties are deeply rooted, some would choose to “raze the walls” by moving more towards associative structures rather than towards “official bodies”.

The Jean-Paulhan (Mas-de-Mingue) and André-Malraux (Chemin-Bas) social centers nevertheless remain places of reference for the inhabitants.

An envelope of € 324,000

François Courdil, assistant to social centers and city policy, likes to describe them as “social lungs”. They are, in collaboration with the associative fabric, the best placed to account for the real needs and the daily problems on the social aspect at least.

“We welcome sports and cultural activities and support isolated elderly people in their efforts (Editor’s note, for vaccination in particular)“, lists Sabrina Guellaen, director of the Jean-Paulhan social center.

The elected François Courdil at the same time recalls the weight of the municipal envelope dedicated to social centers, i.e. € 324,000, “which remains unchanged while most envelopes are subject to savings”, of which he wishes to dedicate 25% to the prevention of delinquency and learning about citizenship.

Regular monitoring difficult to follow

In Jean-Paulhan’s program, reception for young people over 15 years old is normally provided until 8 p.m. – the schedule matches the routine rhythm of young people in the neighborhood to best target those who have it. need.

However, while most actors in the field agree that delinquency “ramp up”, the exemptions available to social centers do not allow, in recent weeks, to continue their missions properly.

Since the start of the first confinement, although a welcome is provided continuously during the day, activities have stopped. Regular monitoring is difficult to maintain.

Social centers close at 6 p.m. If young people could find refuge there, a new string has been torn from their bow since October 30.
