Nikolay Mladenov is the second Bulgarian to be convicted by Pandora Papers

Nikolay Mladenov is the second politician whose name is included in the Pandora Papers investigation, Nova TV reports.

The former military and foreign minister has registered an offshore company in the Seychelles through a Swiss intermediary. This happened in August 2013 – a few months after Mladenov left Bulgarian politics and a week after he became the UN special envoy to Iraq. The diplomat took office on August 2, 2013, and Afron Enterprises Ltd. was established on August 9.

Mladenov himself explained to bird.bg that the registration of a company that appears in his name, it has never worked and never had financial flows.

“In 2013, following the end of the term of office, I decided to start a freelance practice, a new beginning. For this purpose I registered a company through which to work. I contacted Swiss financial advisers and started correspondence with them. Then I received an offer from the UN and my plans changed, “he explained.

Asked about the discrepancy in the dates of his appointment to the UN and the registration of the company, Mladenov said that he can’t remember exactly how the process went. However, he clarified that he started before the beginning of his mandate at the UN.

The data in Pandora Papers shows that SFM has invoiced 600 euros per year to maintain registration, which was active until 2018. Mladenov explained that he had contacted the company and received a document that it has not been active since.
