Nike pair handmade by co-founder

A pair of white sneakers that a co-founder of the sporting goods company Nike made around 50 years ago were auctioned off at an auction in New York for $ 162,500. The auction house Sotheby’s announced yesterday (local time) that it had previously expected a little less – namely $ 150,000. The successful bidder wanted to remain anonymous.

Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman made the shoes for athlete John Mays at the University of Oregon in the early 1970s. Mays had owned her ever since. Among other things, he had tried studs and a sole with a waffle pattern, which should shape the development of sneakers around the world.

In the past few months, several other sneakers had already fetched high prices at auctions: a pair of basketball legend Michael Jordan had been auctioned for $ 560,000 in May, previously a “moon shoe” made in the early 1970s had sold for over $ 430,000 .
