Nigeria Withdraws Ambassador to Indonesia After Diplomats Fight With Immigration Officers

ABUJA, iNews.idNigeria attract ambassadors for Indonesia related allegations persecution by immigration officials against a diplomat in Jakarta.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyema made the announcement after viewing a video of the persecution that had viral on social media last weekend.

“After seeing the video on social media, we immediately contacted the Ambassador to Indonesia and gave us further explanation about what happened. He also confirmed that the video was indeed a diplomat Nigerian on duty. Apparently, the incident occurred during a random raid by Indonesian immigration against illegal immigrants,” said Onyema.

He added, the first thing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did (foreign ministry) is to ask the Ambassador to submit a full and thorough report of what happened. The report was used as the basis for filing a protest with the Government of Indonesia.

“Of course this is the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to submit an official and strong report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta. Under international law, diplomats cannot be blamed. This is a clear violation of the Vienna Convention,” he said.

He emphasized the summons of the ambassador to show the Nigerian government’s displeasure with the mistreatment by immigration officers.

The withdrawal, he stressed, is temporary in order to allow a full investigation into the incident and take concrete steps forward to protect Nigerians in Indonesia.
