Nicolas Cage will play Joe Exotic in a television series devoted to this eccentric lover of big cats at the heart of a successful documentary, “In the kingdom of big cats”, announced an agent of the American actor. The actor will also be the executive producer.
Hybrid between animal documentary and “Breaking Bad”, “In the kingdom of wild beasts” (“Tiger King” in original version) was at the head of the most watched works on Netflix in the United States. It traces the life of the exuberant “Joe Exotic”, 57 years old and his real name Joe Maldonado-Passage, owner of a zoo in Oklahoma, where he raises tigers, lions and other panthers.
Joe Exotic has a peroxidized mullet cut, a horseshoe mustache and multiple earrings. Openly homosexual (he “married” two men during a ceremony for three), he amassed a small fortune thanks to his zoo opened in 1999, his breeding and the not always legal sale of his animals, before losing everything in a tangle of lawsuits, fires of unknown origin and failed political campaigns.
He went so far as to foment the assassination of his intimate enemy Carole Baskin, animal advocate who has sworn to bankrupt the zoo. According to Variety magazine, the series with Nicolas Cage will be created by CBS and will include eight episodes. She “will explore how he became Joe Exotic and how he got lost in his imaginary character,” says Variety.
