Nickel Ore Exports Leak to China, RI Loss Hundreds of Trillions

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Ekonom senior Faisal Basri assessing the country’s losses of up to hundreds of trillions due to leakage export nickel ore in the last five years. This leak is specifically for exports to China.

“The last five years the state has lost hundreds of trillions,” said Faisal in the Core Media Discussion: Beware of State Loss in Mining Investment, Tuesday (12/10).

Faisal explained that Indonesia had banned nickel ore exports in 2020. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) did not record nickel ore exports starting in 2020.

However, the Chinese government actually noted that its country was still importing nickel ore from Indonesia in 2020. The data was recorded at the General Customs Administration of China (GCAC).

“GCAC in 2020 recorded that there were still 3.4 million tons of imports from Indonesia with a value much higher than 2014, which was US$193.6 million or Rp. 2.8 trillion, higher than 2019,” said Faisal.

According to Faisal, the government can actually track the potential leakage of nickel ore exports. For example, calculate the total production of nickel smelters in Indonesia and compare it with the needs of nickel producers.

“The way to track it is easy, just count how many smelters are produced, how much is the normal need, and how much did he (the smelter industry) buy for the production process,” explained Faisal.

For information, the government began to prohibit the export of nickel ore on January 2, 2020. This is stated in the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 11 of 2019 concerning the Second Amendment to the Regulation of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 25 of 2018 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining.
