Nick Kyrgios reveals why he skipped the New York Open

After four decades on the ATP calendar, the Memphis Open 2017 had to be canceled in order to find sponsors for the last few years and to sell the license. The event moved to Long Island, New York and found a new home at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on black hard courts.

This makes them a unique stop on the ATP calendar, at least until the Laver Cup became an official ATP event. Kevin Anderson became the first ever champions in 2018 after defeating Sam Querrey in the title fight.

Last February he succeeded in the success of the domestic star Reilly Opelka after the young American had scored exciting victories against John Isner and Brayden Schnur on the way to the first ATP title. The third edition will take place next week, with John Isner, Milos Raonic and Reilly Opelka as the main candidates for the trophy next Sunday.

Kei Nishikori and Sam Querrey had retired and Nick Kyrgios followed them, who missed a chance for a debut in New York due to a shoulder injury. The Australian is back in the top 20 for the first time since August 2018.

He won six of eight games in 2020 and lost to Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of the Australian Open after an exciting fight. Nick is expected to play at Delray Beach in two weeks’ time when he recovers, loses in the second round a year ago and hopes for a better run after showing focus and determination on the pitch this season.

“Hey New York Open fans. I’m really disappointed that I can’t make it this year. I was looking forward to playing the blacks at NYCB Live. My shoulder has flared and I can’t play. I hope everyone still goes to the big tennis at the New York Open.
