Nicholas Lyndhurst has retired from television, a friend has revealed.

The comedy legend, 60, is staying out of the spotlight as he mourns the tragic death of his son Archie, who died of a brain haemorrhage aged 19 in 2020.

And writer Laurence Marks, who has known Nicholas for more than 25 years, has warned that he is unlikely to return to show business.

He told the Daily Star Sunday: “Nicholas suffered a tragedy. It must have broken her heart. It would break anyone’s heart.

“He has always kept to himself and now he will do it more than ever. Now that he has lost his son, he will never go out again. I doubt we’ll see him perform anymore.

“I would like to say that we will see him perform again, but I don’t think we will. We will have to live off the visual memories of him and we have plenty of them. We have to be thankful for that.”

Nicholas has had a brilliant career on television for nearly five decades.

Millions know him for playing the unlucky Rodney Trotter in Only Fools And Horses and Gary Sparrow in Goodnight Sweetheart.

Over the years, he’s also helped make big hits for New Tricks, The Two Of Us and Butterflies.

Laurence, who worked with Nicholas on Goodnight Sweetheart, rates him as one of the best in the business.

He said: “Working with Nicholas was a pleasure, a real pleasure. He was a very quiet actor, very shy, very reserved, very talented. It’s very normal, which is unusual for actors.

“He was a very good person to work with because he was very focused all the time.

“I think as a living artist, no one has been to shows that have gotten more views than him.”

Nicholas appeared alongside his late son in a 2019 episode of CBBC’s So Awkward.

Archie’s other roles included recurring appearances as a younger incarnation of comedian Jack Whitehall on various television shows.

These included the BBC Three sitcom Bad Education, in which he was seen as a younger version of the Alfie Wickers character from Whitehall.
