NFN Kidney Foundation Dissertation Prize for Edouard Fu

Every year, the Dutch Federation for Nephrology (NFN) and the Kidney Foundation award the Thesis Prize to three talented PhD students during the Dutch Nephrology Days. In advance, a jury assessed all submitted dissertations on, among other things, originality, innovation and carefulness of the research, scientific and social relevance of the research and impact for the patient group. The jury consists of representatives of the NFN, the Kidney Foundation, the Dutch Kidney Patients Association and the Dutch Nephrology Days.

The entrants of the three best-rated dissertations were allowed to give a presentation about their dissertation during the Nephrology Days. The jury determined the ultimate winner on the basis of the presentations: Edouard Fu of the LUMC.

With his dissertation, Edouard Fu wants to contribute to decision-making in patients with kidney disease. He answers a number of clinical questions about the effectiveness and safety of therapies by using state-of-the-art methods and routinely collected healthcare data. In addition, he has sought to raise awareness of potential systematic biases that can occur when using observational data, and how these biases can be reduced. Read the full thesis of Edouard Fu.

Katja Jansen (Utrecht University) came in second with her thesis One cell to rule them all. The Potential of Proximal Tubule Epithelial Cells in Regenerative Kidney Therapies for Uremic Toxin Removal† She looked for more effective removal of uremic toxins in dialysis patients. Dominique Bovée (Erasmus MC) came third with his thesis entitled Salt, acid, and the renin-angiotensin system in chronic kidney disease† He investigated salt-sensitive hypertension and metabolic acidosis, two common complications of chronic renal insufficiency. We congratulate the three PhD students with this great result!
