Next year, the government will hire seven thousand new state employees, there will be almost half a million of them – ČT24 – Czech Television

“Across the political spectrum, we agree that these are the teachers we need, and then they are the armed forces. No one doubts that we need soldiers. You can see the role of the army in this pandemic, “explains Finance Minister Alena Schillerová (for YES).

The government will give a record 240 billion crowns next year for the salaries of state employees. That’s almost 90 billion more than four years ago. Opposition parties criticize further recruitment. According to them, on the contrary, the government should significantly reduce the number of officials, for example through the digitization of the state administration.

The Czech army now has about 26,000 people. She would like to accept another thousand soldiers next year. “The security situation in the world has been deteriorating for the past six to ten years. Therefore, it was decided that the army, which once had 21,000 people, should have 30,000 people. And we are heading for this number, “says Jan Pejšek, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense.

The Ministry of the Interior then counts on new positions for 150 firefighters. And hundreds of police officers should be recruited. The final real numbers will depend on the success of the recruits. “As new highways are built, there is pressure on new highway departments. We are gradually developing them, that is several hundred places at the highway police, “describes the Minister of the Interior Jan Hamáček (CSSD).

Most people will go to education

Almost five thousand people are to be accepted by institutions under the Ministry of Education next year. These are not only new teachers, but also their assistants or non-teaching staff. According to the resort, there is still a shortage of them. “The number of teachers and non-teaching staff is growing, ie those who take care of our children. And this is also the case in connection with the growing number of children in the Czech education system, “says Minister of Education Robert Plaga (for YES).

For example, the principal of one of Prague’s primary schools, Václav Havelka, would like to expand his choir by two teachers. So far, he has 50 people under him. “Teachers are missing across the whole country, in some combinations, such as first-grade teaching or teachers of physics and mathematics,” says Havelka, the principal of the Chmelnice primary school.

Streamline state administration

Opposition parties agree to recruit new teachers, police or soldiers. At the same time, however, the government should cut through the number of officials. He sees no reason for the overall growth in the number of civil servants. “It’s about making the state administration more efficient, it’s about digitizing it more. Only in this way can we reduce the number of civil servants, ”thinks SPD Chairman Tomio Okamura.

“We see as a question mark, for example, several hundred financial administration officials whose task is to control the EET, which is suspended at the same time. We also see room for some savings, “adds Mikuláš Ferjenčík (Pirates), Deputy Chairman of the Budget Committee of the Chamber of Deputies. The Minister of Finance defends herself by reducing the number of people in the ministry.

While four years ago the state paid 422 thousand people, next year it should be 60 thousand more. This is despite the fact that there have been approximately 20,000 vacancies in the state sphere for a long time.

“The government has absolutely given up on any meaningful savings, it does not pay any attention to it and the number is actually growing throughout the time when the YES movement and the Social Democrats rule,” says ODS deputy chairman Zbyněk Stanjura.
