Imaginecole: UNESCO’s Global Education Coalition launches a learning platform for Francophone Africa

As part of the Global Coalition for Education, UNESCO is launching Imaginecole, a regional e-learning platform that will make educational resources available to 6.6 million Francophone students in West Africa. quality.

Launched on December 21, 2021 in Dakar, the platform aims to ensure educational continuity, pool educational resources and build the capacities of actors involved in distance education.

It thus strengthens the resilience of education systems in the face of the major crisis caused by COVID-19, and responds to a request for support from the Conference of Ministers of Education, States and Governments of La Francophonie (CONFEMEN) during of the extraordinary meeting of its Bureau last April.

Developed in a spirit of partnership, Imaginecole is the result of close cooperation with CONFEMEN, La Francophonie, the French Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and the expertise of its Canopé Network operator, through funding for the Global Partnership for Education.

“Today, we know that, even if the vaccines are coming, the end of the pandemic is not immediately. It is therefore crucial to support and develop the resources of distance education, ”UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said at the launch of the platform. “Firstly because it is a necessity, at a time when three quarters of the States of sub-Saharan Africa wish to maintain hybrid models. Then, because digital technology has an essential role to play in making learning more relevant and more inclusive, even if it is not the answer to all problems. “

The platform has more than 600 learning objects in French, such as educational videos, educational tips and example sheets, for immediate use, and in an emergency response logic, including in the context hybrid devices between distance education and classroom. It will also allow teachers / designers to create educational resources directly online and publish them either on “Imaginecole” or in other national, regional or international platforms.

By offering resources intended to be also printed, the platform takes into account the reality of digital exclusion: 8 out of 10 students in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to the internet.

Each of the ten countries concerned (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Togo) will have a specific entry point where they can add their own resources to compose their collections in order to respond to local contexts. Réseau Canopé, operator of the French Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports with the support of the Maskott company, member of the International Coalition for Education and its Tactileo solution, carries out capacity building and coordination of platform development.

The launch of the platform coincides with the publication of the results of the regional survey on learning outcomes (PASEC), a regional initiative led by CONFEMEN. The platform also responds to the need to improve the quality of education in a new context, by making learning resources available and developing the capacity of teachers in the digital domain.

The Global Education Coalition, launched by UNESCO in March 2020, mobilizes some 160 partners to support pedagogical continuity and strengthen the resilience of education systems.
