NEWS: MONTPELLIER – A series of measures to green the city: Hérault Tribune

The municipality has undertaken a series of measures to revegetate Montpellier as part of the “Montpellier ville nature” project. This makes it possible to offer a better quality of life to citizens. Depending on the city, “The new tree charter and the creation of the Tree Committee, the first meeting of which was held on February 15, 2021, are the first elements of the City’s ambitious action plan, which, in addition to a vast program planting of 50,000 additional trees over 10 years within the framework of urban forests, the preservation of the tree heritage is a priority.

An opinion on the arrangements so as not to impact the plant heritage

The mission of the Tree Committee is to give an opinion on all development projects that would impact the plant heritage, in particular on the public domain. The objective of the committee is to raise awareness and to effect a change towards urban planning that takes into account the existing. “Plant wealth must be a structuring element to be preserved in urbanization and thus constantly find a balance between constructability and tree preservation.

The Tree Committee is made up of elected representatives and recognized associations in the field of nature protection:

– Stéphane JOUAULT, President of the Tree Committee, Deputy Mayor of Montpellier, delegate for nature in the city and biodiversity,

– Maryse FAYE, Deputy Mayor of Montpellier, delegate for sustainable town planning and land management,

– Laurent NISON, Deputy Mayor of Montpellier, delegate for major works, embellishment of the city and coordination of works,

– Frédéric LAFFORGUE, Vice-President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, delegate for Roads and Public Space,

– Clément LEMARCHAND from the Association des Ecologists de l’Euzière,

– Nicolas SAULNIER from the League for the Protection of Birds Occitanie,

– Yves CARAGLIO from the Center for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD).
