The United Nations general debate begins today in New York.
The fight against the corona pandemic, strategies against climate change and the development in Afghanistan were named as central topics of the meeting. The opening speech will be given by UN Secretary General Guterres, US President Biden and China’s Head of State Xi. Many heads of state and government are expected again in person in New York for the week-long conference. In the past year, many participants submitted their entries via video. Federal President Steinmeier travels to New York on behalf of Germany; he will speak on Friday. Chancellor Merkel takes part in the UN general debate via video link.
