New York scraps almost all corona measures

New York is canceling almost all measures to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Last year, the American state was still considered a corona fire, but now more than 70 percent of adult residents have had at least one dose of a corona vaccine. Governor Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday it is time to “return to our old lives”.

According to local media, the decision means that cinemas can fill up again and that tables in restaurants no longer have to be placed at a large distance from each other. Checking the body temperature of people entering buildings is also a thing of the past. Sports centres, hairdressers and other companies are also no longer obliged to ask customers to leave their contact information.

Cuomo spoke of an “important milestone”. Despite this jubilation, the authorities are not entirely satisfied with the course of the vaccination campaign. In boroughs such as the Bronx and Brooklyn in New York City, vaccine readiness is lagging behind.

The authorities try to convince doubters with all kinds of special actions to get vaccinated. For example, a puncture location is opened in the Empire State Building. People who get vaccinated there can then go to the observation deck on the 86th floor of the famous skyscraper for free. Tickets normally cost tens of dollars.

Corona measures are also being canceled in other places in the country. The US has the highest death toll from the pandemic with approximately 600,000 deaths worldwide, but is also among the international leaders in vaccination. California, where 72 percent of adults have had at least one vaccine dose, also withdrew almost all corona measures on Tuesday. Governor Gavin Newsom called it “reopening day”.
