New York renovates LaGuardia Airport

Dhe New York La Guardia Airport is due to have a major overhaul. The airport, which opened in 1939 and is mainly used for connections within the United States, should be completely rebuilt in two stages by around 2021, said American Vice President Joe Biden and New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday with. The first part of the construction work, for which the equivalent of around 3.6 billion euros is estimated, should be completed by 2019.

Several old terminals are being demolished. The new airport is to have a new central terminal instead of four small terminals. The airport will also be connected to the subway.

“We’re transforming La-Guardia into a world-renowned airport for the 21st century, as befits the city and state of New York,” said Cuomo. In 2016, however, the responsible airport authority must first approve the plan.

Travelers and airlines have been complaining for years that La-Guardia is outdated, congested and poorly connected. Named after the former New York City Mayor Fiorello La-Guardia (1882-1947), the airport in the borough of Queens has four terminals and in 2014 had around 30 million passengers. Unlike JFK Airport, which is mainly used for international connections, further south of the metropolis, LaGuardia has no subway connection, for example.
