With the OMNY contactless payment system, passengers on New York’s public transport network, the MTA, can hold an iPhone or Apple Watch near a contactless reader to pay their fare without the need for further authentication, which enables fast passage through public transport hubs enables.

OMNY tap-and-go tariff payments with Apple Pay Express public transport have been available at one of New York City’s most important transportation hubs, Penn Station, since December 2019, followed by a number of other stations in early 2020. The rollout was originally supposed to continue , but the installation of the new readers was paused at the end of March, delaying completion until December 2020. As stated in a message from the MTA, the installation in New York has now been completed network-wide:

OMNY currently only works for individual journeys. It is not yet possible to pay in advance for an unlimited ticket. MetroCards, which precede the OMNY system, will continue to work on subways and buses until 2023, when they will be completely replaced by OMNY.
