New York protests against abortion ruling

Hundreds of protesters gathered in New York to protest the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade judgment.

After the decision of the highest US court to reverse the 1973 Roe v. Wade verdict, protests erupted in New York on Friday. Soon after the ruling, the group of protesters at the Capitol quickly grew to more than 1,000 people.

The decision allows the 50 states to decide for themselves whether they allow abortion. The New York Times reports that nine states have already banned abortions: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin. The newspaper expects other states to follow in the coming days.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has already said his city will welcome women from banned states if they want to have an abortion. Adams says he’s already consulting with businesses in the city to find a solution to women’s transportation costs. “There is no reason why our companies cannot come together to help people who seek the right to abortion.”

Safety precautions

In addition, he is tightening up the security measures. “We will be vigilant in all locations so that no one can be threatened or harassed for the right to abortion,” it said. About 400 people attended his speech at City Hall.

Bans Off Our Bodies, a national campaign led by abortion rights groups, has called on women to join the protest to “demand control over our bodies, our lives and our future.”
