This Thursday, the United States Department of Justice reported that it is conducting an investigation of the New York Police (NYPD) for the alleged mismanagement of some cases in which it refers to a sexual crime, this after receiving complaints on “humiliation and abuse” of victims.

According to the statement posted by the Department of Justice on Twitter, it has received information about the “deficiencies” that the NYPD has had for more than a decade and that indicate that “basic steps” have been omitted in the delicate investigations, which in his opinion, it has “even more traumatized” many victims.

“Sexual assault survivors should expect effective, trauma-informed, victim-centered investigations from police departments,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Many of the victims of sexual crimes have accused the New York police of not properly investigating their cases and of traumatizing them during the process.

“These shortcomings allegedly include failing to perform basic investigative steps and instead shaming and abusing survivors and re-traumatizing them during investigations,” the statement said.

“Respectful, thorough and complete investigations of sexual assaults are essential to a well-functioning justice system,” said United States Attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York.

United States Attorney Damian Williams for the Southern District of New York emphasized that relentless and effective prosecution of perpetrators of sexual violence, which is “free from gender stereotyping or differential treatment, is essential to public safety.”
