New York Offers Free Cooking and Nutrition Workshops – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK — The New York City Health Department is presenting free in-person cooking and nutrition workshops from Stellar Farmers’ Markets for its 2022 summer/fall season.

This program offers free nutrition education workshops and healthy cooking demonstrations using seasonal, locally grown produce at select farmers’ markets throughout the city from July through November.

The program builds on participants’ knowledge and skills of how and why to prepare healthy meals. For example, participants discuss healthy eating topics, like reading food labels and planning healthy meals, flavoring foods with less salt, and storing produce to last longer. This season, participants will return to the preparation and in-person tasting of delicious recipes based on seasonal plants. All participants over the age of 18 receive a coupon Health Bucks de $2, redeemable for fresh fruits and vegetables at any New York City Farmers Market.

“Healthy food is medicine that all New Yorkers should have access to,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “Changing my diet by eating healthier foods helped transform my life, putting my type 2 diabetes into remission. And providing all New Yorkers with access to those same healthy foods is crucial to building a more equitable city. Farmers markets abound fresh fruits and vegetables and I encourage all New Yorkers to take advantage of these nutrition workshops and healthy cooking demonstrations.

Since its inception in 2009, Stellar Farmers Markets has reached more than 250,000 participants and has held more than 16,000 workshops, in different languages, including Spanish. The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Nutrition Education Program (USDA SNAP-Ed) through the Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables from the New York State Department of Health.
