“It is my duty to protect the Jewish community from anti-Semitism and bigotry”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams travels to Athens, Greece, this week for the 2022 Mayors Summit Against Anti-Semitism. Wednesday’s summit comes after NYPD foiled an attempted attack on synagogues last weekend and in light of the almost daily attacks and harassment of Jews in the city. “As mayor of the largest Jewish community in the United States, it is my duty to protect it from anti-Semitism and bigotry,” he said after last week’s attempted attack by a gunman wearing a Nazi sash.
As a result of this threat, New York increased the police presence in synagogues until at least Hanukkah. After Greece, Adams will travel to Doha, Qatar, host of the FIFA World Cup. He will meet with government leaders and security officials during the trip to prepare New York and New Jersey to host the games in 2026, his office said in a statement.
