The coronavirus epidemic is spreading at lightning speed in New York State. Almost 3,000 cases have been confirmed since the start of the crisis. It is the region of the United States most affected by COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the Brooklyn Nets revealed that four of their players, including Kevin Durant, had contracted the coronavirus.

The rapid detection of Nets players has also infuriated the mayor of New York City. Bill de Blasio wrote on Twitter that he wished them a speedy recovery, but added that he was confused as to why players on an NBA team were tested before sick patients.

The mayor of the Big Apple believes that screening tests should be done for people who really need it rather than for athletes in full health.

The Nets and the NBA defend themselves

The NBA reacted quickly by saying that public health officials as well as Nets medics were concerned that the players had spread the virus among themselves and with the public. The fact that athletes travel a lot would also have tipped the scales.

On Wednesday, the Nets organization announced that several players and members of its staff had recently experienced symptoms akin to COVID-19.

The team ensured that all of its tests were carried out by a private company and that all costs were borne by the Nets. The training claims to have thus taken the means not to further clog the public screening system.
