New York Knicks arguably interested in Trade for Russell Westbrook

The New York Knicks are planning on the upcoming draft, in which they have three draft picks. According to a report, the front office is currently working on a trade to improve its position in the draft. However, a deal for a superstar could also be sought.

SportsNet New York reports that the Knicks want a new point guard in any case. This could be LaMelo Ball, for example, which they could no longer get with their picks. New York has picks 8, 27 and 38, and Ball is expected to be in the top five in almost all mock drafts.

That is why the front office around the new team president Leon Rose would like to trade upwards. However, the report also allows the Knicks to change course by November 18, when the draft takes place. If a new point guard has already been fetched by trade by then.

New York Knicks: Chris Paul oder Russell Westbrook?

The Knicks have already been linked to Chris Paul from OKC Thunder several times, and the new report now also brings Russell Westbrook from the Houston Rockets into play. Should Houston make the superstar available, an interest from the Knicks is expected. Westbrook had again named New York as a possible destination in the summer of 2019 when OKC was looking for a trade for him.

However, like Paul, Westbrook is an absolute high earner: the 31-year-old is still entitled to a total of $ 132 million over the next three years. So it would be a challenge to just balance salaries to make a trade possible. In addition, the Knicks would probably require another asset for it.

Westbrook and Paul were traded for each other in the summer of 2019. Paul was sent to Oklahoma City with a total of up to four first-round picks. The 35-year-old then reached the All-NBA Second Team, Westbrook was elected to the Third Team. In the playoffs, Houston prevailed in the first round in seven games against the Thunder.
