New York gives the green light to ring in the new year in Times Square, but with proof of vaccination in hand – Telemundo New York (47)

What you should know

  • Crowds will be allowed to return to welcome 2022 in Times Square this year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday; however, visitors must bring complete proof of vaccination and valid photo ID.
  • The fall of the ball to mark the end of another year more devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic comes as the epicenter of the crisis continues on an accelerated path of recovery.
  • The confetti continued to rain on the streets until the end of 2020, but the streets were empty; this year it will be different, but not the same.

NEW YORK – Times Square will once again fill with crowds to relive the joy of Christmas and ring in the New Year, though visitors planning to attend will need to bring a complete vaccination proof and valid photo ID, said the mayor of the New York City, Bill de Blasio, this Tuesday.

It will be a great celebration “in full force,” said the mayor as he made a noise with half a dozen members of his team doing the same behind him.

He had hinted at a “great and wonderful celebration” for 2022 after witnessing eerily empty streets, as well as a well-deserved celebration for a small group of front-line health heroes who displayed a ton of confetti last year. It was not immediately clear how many people will be allowed in Times Square on Dec. 31.

The fall of the ball to mark the end of yet another year, devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic, comes as the epicenter of the crisis continues on an accelerated path of recovery, fueled by vaccines. De Blasio said this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration will be a time of inspiration locally and abroad.

Just a year ago, New Years visitors were told “Don’t come” to Times Square to celebrate, but a lot has changed since then. However, many things are not yet in their entirety.

Ultimately, the New Years Eve party will be a far cry from the crowd-free atmosphere that encapsulated the 2020 festivities. Those came just before another significant wave of COVID-19 swept through the United States, and just as the first vaccines they were available to healthcare workers and other front-line workers.

All the celebrations and festivities will continue to be broadcast live on television and online as they did last year, but the overall feeling will certainly be different.
