New York declares gun violence a public health crisis

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement yesterday. Over the past weekend, 51 shootings took place across the state. Cuomo therefore speaks of a public health crisis that he compares with the corona crisis.

Comprehensive approach

“This is a national crisis,” Cuomo said. “But someone has to lead by example. That’s why New York, just like we did with the corona crisis, will lead the country on the right path.” The governor proposes a ‘comprehensive approach’ to combat and prevent gun violence.

The governor is making more than 138 million dollars (117 million euros) available to tackle the problem. Millions go to the police forces, summer programs for unemployed youth and prevention teams.

‘An epidemic’

More than 30,000 people are killed by bullets in the United States each year. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden called gun violence in the United States “an epidemic and an international disgrace.”
