“Yesterday and last night we saw the best of our city,” tweeted Mr. de Blasio, indicating that the curfew, in effect between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. was ending “immediately”.

The curfew was lifted on the eve of the start of the deconfinement of the city on Monday, the most damaged by the COVID-19 epidemic.

This week, the US economic capital will enter phase 1 of the plan to reopen economic activities that had been shut down due to the spread of the new coronavirus, which has claimed more than 21,000 confirmed and probable deaths in New York. , the most populous city in the United States.

This phase 1 will allow construction companies and factories to return to work. Retail businesses will be allowed to reopen in a restricted form.

On June 2, the Democratic mayor announced the extension until June 7 of the curfew decreed the day before after many luxury stores in Manhattan had been looted and vandalized on the sidelines of protests against police violence and racism.

During this second weekend of protests, thousands of people took to the streets, in a mostly peaceful manner. On Saturday, participants defied the curfew but the police generally let them go, unlike the previous nights.

The New York police had indeed charged and sometimes violently pushed back protesters who had violated the curfew in the previous days.
