New York commemorates the 2,977 victims of the terror wave of 20 years ago

The World Trade Center’s “Twin Towers” were once the tallest buildings in the world and have dominated New York’s Manhattan financial center since the 1970s. Numerous major banks and financial institutions were located here and terrorists regarded them as the symbol of America as a leading economic powerhouse.

In 1993 a heavy bomb exploded at the bottom of one of the buildings. There was then damage and six people were killed, but the structures held up. A new and higher office building was erected nearby a few years ago, One World Trade Center that is 541 meters high or 1776 feet, a reference to the year of American independence.
