New York City Records First Day Without Covid Deaths

(Bloomberg) – New York City, which in the past was the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic in the United States, has just reported its first day with zero confirmed or probable deaths from covid-19 since the virus hit the state. from New York.

The milestone was achieved Sunday in initial data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. It marked the end of a four-month period since the city reported its first death from covid-19 on March 11. The confirmed daily death count peaked on April 7, with 597 deaths. Another 216 people were reported to have likely died from the virus despite no positive laboratory tests that day.

“New Yorkers have been the heroes of this story, going above and beyond to stay safe,” city council spokeswoman Avery Cohen said in an emailed statement.

New York state reported five deaths statewide on Sunday, but did not specify where they occurred. The highest number of deaths in the entire state was reported on April 9, with 799.

New York City has reported a total of 18,670 confirmed covid-19 deaths and 4,613 probable deaths.

On Saturday, another 341 people tested positive for covid-19 in New York City, a rate of 1.3 percent, according to state data. The city kicked off phase three of restarting activity on Monday, allowing beauty salons, tanning studios and dog runs to open.

Restaurant services within establishments in the city have been postponed indefinitely as other states, including Texas and Florida, have seen spikes in new cases after the reopening of bars and restaurants.

“In the absence of national leadership, our city has taken a step forward to show what it means to reopen safely,” said Cohen. “With cases on the rise across the country, we know we still cannot let our guard down and we will continue to do our best to fight the virus together.”

Washington DC has also recorded a decrease in deaths from coronavirus this month. Figures released by the mayor’s office on Sunday showed no new deaths in the past three days.

In the United States, the total deaths reported by covid-19 were 134,904 as of Sunday, 0.4 percent more on the day.
